fyn gula That is what he hoped, what his dreams were at night, what he wished when he blew out the candles, but what it really sounded like, this music of language, made those who heard, not dance, but cover their ears. not for the loudness, nor even the irritation, but it was the accent, not foreign, or even interesting, but a tone so peculiar people were frightened. they weren't even sure if he was human. some kind of angel maybe, who appeared in their life for a brief interlude and what he showed them, they hoped they could remember. 000203

camille that was lost behind correction and the rapping of hands by the ruler
my mother suffered long and hard the embarrassment of her language
"The teacher yelled, "You will learn the english language and learn it well, do you understand!?"
mother with head lowered answered with a tearful "si"(see) "si" (see)

But did the warden see? si, she did. My mother learned her english and taught her children how "not" to speak spanish.

my accent was lost beneath the rap of a ruler...

Rhin I always thought that I spoke the bland white-bred American accent, but they say, I have this slight country drawl, which can sometimes be even more pronounced, when I become comfortable with the person. I also have a very soft voice, but sometimes it will have a rough edge to it. I guess that's perfect for when I want to seduce someone. Other than that... 001206

misstree "aye, lassie," he would say to me, blue scottish eyes sparkling. i was entranced by this exotic bird, this roguish punk offering to sweep me off to a shining castle.

it happened before, this accent-driven madness. a chainmail cowboy, from spurs to swords, with a deep texas drawl that could rumble deep romanian at will...

i played different roles for these boys, holding myself in statue-like poses so they might alight in my arms for a while... as it turned out, they were no more real than me, and disappeared in a flurry of brightly colored feathers.

oldephebe I remember spending a few years in West Virginia as a student at West Virginia Tech - When i arrived there ah most of the students had a softer more genteel accent, they were either from ohio, the suburbs of Washington D.C., by way of Virginia or Maryland or suburban Baltimore. Some kids were from Pittsburg. A few were from Tennesse or the part of Ohio that bordered Kentucky. So there was a nice melange of accents to listen to and try to pin down their origin. It was great going into town and listening to the more acute, ah sharper, ah pronounced accents of the townies. And ah of course me being from southeastern pa. my ah north eastern speech studiously scoured of all affect or accent stuck out like the proverbial inflamed thumb
there IS an abhorrent philadelphia/south jersey accent - in fact in the city there are probably 4 or 5 distinct accents - I hate all of them - I thank god in retrospect that my parents were such elocution nazis

you can wake up now I'm finished
