Heavenly Creatures (1994)

Juliet Hulme: Only the best people fight against all obstacles in pursuit of happiness.

Pauline Parker: Tis a miracle, one must feel, that two such heavenly creatures are real.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Juliet Hulme: All the best people have bad chests and bone diseases. It's all frightfully romantic.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pauline Parker: She is the most unreasonable. Why could not mother die? Dozens of people are dying all the time, thousands, so why not mother? And father too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[voiceover, from her diary]
Pauline Parker: We have decided how sad it is for others that they cannot fully appreciate our genius.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pauline Parker: Oh, I wish James Mason would do a religious picture! He'd be perfect as Jesus!
Juliet Hulme: Daddy says the Bible's a load of bunkum!
Pauline Parker: But we're all going to heaven?!
Juliet Hulme: I'M not! I'M going to The Fourth World... it's sort of like heaven. Only better, because there aren't any Christians!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Of Pauline's homosexuality]
Doctor Bennett: Chances are she'll grow out of it. If not... well, medical science is progressing in leaps and bounds. There could be a breakthrough at any time!

Zed It's weird hearing you talk about this film like this.

I was taught to horse ride by the real life girl from the film 'Heavenly Creatures'. Not Kate Winsletts character, the other one. Her name had been changed of course.

She was a really nice woman. She always kept herself to herself and she never watched any television. She had a lot of dolls and a stable full of horses, but she rarely had any contact with anyone. She worked at a school with my mum and enjoyed opera.

We only found out who she was after that film came out and the press tracked her down. It was quite a suprise - you don't expect to find that out about anyone's past.

At the end of the day though, the women I knew (knew, for she has fled once again from the press), was a good woman - a woman who was a million miles away from the character in that film.

So it's weird.

silentbob that is really fascinating to me
i looked up a lot of stuff about her after i saw the movie and it was just as you described. they even went and interviewed her sister who was very forgiving and said she was sorry for what she had done so people should leave her alone. i want her and the other girl (who is in fact mystery author Anne Perry) to reunite. mouahahah!

Zed Yeah, but they haven't spoken since the trial - as ordered.

Also I think that they wanted complete fresh starts.

The woman I knew just wanted to forget it.

It was so strange because the newspaper article I read had a picture of her on a horse and we were all like, "That's (her new name), shit!"

It was very suprising, but we made sure we stayed her friends, because we only knew the new her.

We still get Christmas cards from her I think.

blown cherry few films have gotten through to me and crept under my skin in the way that this one did.

By far the best work Peter Jackson has ever directed.
