Bob Hope is finally dead, thank God. I, for one, will not miss that old bastard. Has the world so easily forgotten his penchant for blackface and his association with the infamous coke bottle rapist, Fatty Arbuckle? And, did he ever actually make a good movie? He's a schlep!

niska oh, but that's not the top story. we're told we should really be interested in what he's worth in US dollars, and who gets all the kablingy...

trying to find a basic human emotion through modern media today is hopeLESS, kinda like the world now. (you know, without bob... hehe)

anyway, what a shit world this is.

extorted bob hope fan You know what? I was trying to enjoy my carefully cultivated grief. You know? All brought to me by the courtesy of the hydra-headed media consortium. (*Sigh) Now the veil has been torn asunder.

Now I'm really torn between my authentic grief over an image, an icon, and a rapcious relic of a despotic, paternalistic so called power elite. And ah really I feel betrayed by the essential and unresolvable contradictions. His life and ah now his death has spawned his subsequent and further apotheosis - I mean, did bob hope put a benign blithe paternalistic smile on the face of western imperialism during those halcyon days?

I liked clinging to my my clear and codified absolutes. Why'd you have to clarify things for me? You've made it all messy and murky with the truth. ...and now clinging gingerly to any redemptive or enobling virtue hope may have had.

Were all his grandiose and seemingly honest acts of altruism a blithely yet skillful finesse (his USO TOURS) was there not one thing that he did that wasn't at the behest of commerce or career or injunction of the State - propogating all that faux patriotism.

I had been indefagitable in my really inspired sycophancy - buffing the floor with my brow before all the icons and idols - and now i'm just..deflated. You know what? I think now i'll just pull my world more snugly around me. Bob Hope dead and not one enobling thread among these dead dregs. Boy what a bummer!

ex -Bob Hope fan Hey! We should just enshrine Bob Hope in the pantheon of deities of a passive pop-culture. Let's have a saturnalian soiree and just be done with it.

Should we say let the stars pour down plagues upon this age? Upon the age of omnivorous visual consumption. Should we chafe at our own enabling of our own spiritual, cultural erosions of being? Our tacit compliance, our studied stupefaction? - I'm just fine with the
fin de siecle.

Bob Hope helped to perpetuate the fallacy of an avuncular and innocous sort of ballast, sort of a benign facade on the face of implacable power. As long as Bob Hope was still alive then something of those fictions of the fifties still remained to haunt our memories, the culture with an illusory but still keenly felt/experienced nostalgia, pining for a time and a sense of values that really never was.

Bob Hope avuncular and elitist and oh so culturally and ethnically monochromatic, boy he sure shored up our flagging patriotism. He didn't roil the waters, he didn't ask us to think about the maggots breeding and writhing in the bedrock of our burnished and self-congratulatory semblance of verisimilitude - we crowned commerce as the presiding arbiter in all things.

Yeah ,yeah ladies and gentlemen that's wild, wild. Yes sir, yes sir. My jokes are obsolescent inchoherencies - yea, yeah - I gotta tell ya ..I'm stomping out all those embers of insurrection yeah yeah. Where's my eight iron? Not sure if I really captured the cadense of Bob Hopes insipid, hackneyed delivery - plus there's no canned laugh track to punctuate and butress the approximations of the Hope argot.

oldephebe you know, it strikes me that this blather is just more of me declaiming the fifties (and er forties) what is it with this love/hate thing I have for the decade of my grandparents and parents.

I'm not sure but I will have to work this thing out. Most people today have no idea who Bob Hope was or what he represented - it's ancient history.

During a real truculent period of my childhood I developed this love affair with old movies - being an insomniac kind of helped as well - so I guess some kind of transferance and inculcation took place - in those quiet hours - and then when I began to take history courses and study political science I felt robbed or betrayed or something. The fifties were not this age of bedrock security and high morals and steadfstness I'd thought I'd gleaned as a kid vicariously, yes and yes watching cylinders of celluloid propoganda probably not going to yeild an accurate picture of objective reality, or managed reality as it was back then - but still ..when I started this blathe I'd hoped to illicit a range of responses -

maybe I'll make this my de-facto memorial and exhumation of that decade -
in a way the usurpations of the 60's helped to define the 50's as almost as pivotal a decade as the 60's - at least in my view -

still enjoy the dean martin and jerry lewis flicks though
