I love airports. I once thought about getting a shitty retail job at a duty free store just so I could hang out there all day. There's such a feeling of optimism... everyone's getting to escape their dreary reality- if only for two weeks.

Even after almost twenty years, little bits of memory, crystallized, surface. Walking around the foot of Montmartre through dirt and stone courtyards, where medium-sized trees provide a suitably Daoist balance of sun and shade among the simple buildings facing. Staring, knowing and knowing I didn't know, at the amazing collection of Impressionists crammed haphazardly at the Jeu de Pomme. But really it was all about sitting along the Champs Elysee, always at some anonymous cafe, with perfectly bittersweet hot chocolate and a cliche chunk of French pasty, watching the like and not-so-alike roll endlessly on by.

Metro escalators. You get to see lots of people in little time. But people and talking-people are entirely different.

some artist made a public bathroom out of two-way mirrors and put that small room on a busy streetcorner in Denmark(?) people couldn't see in, but you could see out. it was supposed to be a exercise with your personal sense of decency. i'm sure that would be the most *interesting* place to people watch, at least...

Elevators, if you can be sly. Subways, if you're a romantic. Airports, if you are a thespian. Coffee shops, if you love the little things. Parking lots, if you're a pessimist. Playgrounds, if you have great wit. Laundromats, if you're a sad artist. Nestled in France, if you're a happy one. High schools, if you can camouflage. Colleges, if you love to laugh. From a high perch, if you've a God complex. In a mall, if you dig disillusionment. At a 24/7 photocopy shop at 3am, if you are fascinated by desperation. At a public indoor pool, if you seek serenity. At an outdoor one, if you life lacks chaos. Church, if you're an anthropologist. At a druggy rave, if you care for Dali. Bars about to close and last call two hours ago, if you like bittersweetness. These all work conveniently with lonely people, or those with penchants for beauty.

from the cafe on the balcony of grand central station at morning rush hour. the currents and eddies of commuters create a hypnotic dynamic patternation. i enjoy the slanted and indirect light from the four (?) stories of window that make up most of the east wall and the gangways which cross them.

"city buses" reminds me of the cover of a book called "welcome to the machine". it features the x ray picture of a bus and its passengers, commuters all going about their own business, reading a newspaper or just sitting there with blank skeletal expressions.
