. The Nobel Prize in Literature

Literature is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. The will was, however, partly incomplete. Nobel simply stated that prizes be given to those who, during the preceding year,
"shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction."

The three scientists, in a theory known as quantum_chromodynamics (QCD), also showed that when quarks are close together at extremely high energies they act like free particles, a state they called "asymptotic_freedom."

. The trio's specific discovery, made three decades ago, concerns the so-called strong force, or "colour force", which is dominant in the atomic nucleus.

They showed that unlike forces such as electromagnetism and gravity, which grow more powerful as two particles get closer to one another, the strong force actually gets weaker as two quarks converge. It is as if the particles were connected by a rubber band that pulls them together more tightly as it stretches.

(Dec 11 2003) - Nobel prize winner (Ms Ebadi, 56, a reformist lawyer) attacks west - at The Guardian (UK).

Hailed as a hero among Iranian reformists and shunned by Tehran's hardline clerics, she yesterday accused the US administration of ignoring UN resolutions in the Middle East yet using them as a pretext to go to war in Iraq.

"In the past two years, some states have violated the universal principles and laws of human rights by using the events of September 11 and the war on international terrorism as a pretext," she said in her acceptance speech.

"Regulations restricting human_rights and basic freedoms _ have been justified and given legitimacy under the cloak of the war_on_terrorism."

Swindles What has Obama done that has been so noteworthy? The war still rages. While I understand his potential, and the way he has captivated and inspired so many people, I do not think this prize so very fitting. I see it more of a "thank you for not being Bush." Here, have a trophy, you are so nice and fashionable. Besides that matter, he has been blessed with having more opportunity to "take great strides in international diplomacy" because he is the president. What about people who have risked their lives to continue womens education and healthcare under the Taliban regime? There are so many things.
I cannot take this prize seriously any longer, it has become a beauty contest for the prettiest speech.
