somebody Summer today, gone tomorrow by Michael Pena Well, it was fun while it lasted. But no sooner did
SF State students dig up summer gear they had packed away for the winter than did the
all-too-familiar fog roll back in, ending the two-day scorcher which had everyone reeling. Students
half-jokingly said they felt like passing out on Monday and Tuesday, when temperatures toppled
records all over the Bay Area. On Tuesday, San Francisco baked at 99 degrees, 5 degrees hotter
than the record set in 1992; and on Monday, it was 98 degrees in the city, topping the record set in
1992 by 4 degrees. "Everybody was hating life," said Charles Wagner, a Spanish major who spent
the warmer part of the week in front of the student union, watching sun worshippers soak it up and
everyone else run for cover. "Every spot in the shade was taken," Wagner said. "It was a horrible
day to be wearing black jeans." Erika Dahlgren was one of the unlucky souls caught with her pants
(as opposed to shorts) on. "I was totally caught off-guard on Monday," said Dahlgren, who is
studying to become a pharmacist. And to make things worse, she isn't from around here. "I'm from
Alaska, so it's been hot." However, others from out of town felt right at home. Jay Sheffield, a
graduate student going for a master's degree in social work, said the heatwave was a lot like the type
of weather one would expect back home in Georgia. "I really like this weather," he said. Then came
Tuesday's blackout, which added to the congestion in Malcolm X Plaza and irritated more than a few
students. Ray Bernheim, a hospitality management major, said the student union was evacuated and
cordoned off during the power outage. "I was about to use the ATM when the 'closed' sign flipped
up," he said, describing his experience with the power outage. "I noticed a big difference in people's
attitudes," said Muata Kenyatta, director of performing arts for Associated Students. But here in
California, especially in the Bay Area, people are more accustomed to a milder climate. "San
Francisco isn't quite prepared for this heat," said Sheffield. "I like it warm, but I don't like it that damn
hot," Kenyatta said. As temperatures dropped to normal -- or what SF State students consider
normal -- all the swooning around campus was replaced by shivering. Students in skimpy tops and
shorts, ready to face another day of dry, unrelenting heat, bustled to class Wednesday morning,
clutching their bare shoulders, asking: "What happened?" It was drizzling and just 63 degrees on
campus by noon. "It's horrible," said business major Diana Stock as she held a hot cup of coffee
close to her with both hands.

minnesota_chris it looks like crap too.

At first I thought this was "at the moment worshippers," like people who worship you today and crucify you tomorrow.
