Strideo Well I'm sure many of you subscribe to cable or satellite television but for those of you who still watch television over the air and have an analog set I'm sure you've already heard that you'll need a digital converter box by February of 2009. I figured I'd bring it up anyways.

This is the link to the website where you can apply for up to two 40 dollar coupons toward the purchase of those digital converter boxes.

https://www.dtv2009.gov/

The thing is I'd recommend you go online and do a little research about the brands of digital converter boxes and their features before just going out to the store to buy one because some of these converter boxes are better than others and from I've read so far if you use your coupon and buy a bad one you lose your 40 dollars toward the purchase of one when you go back to exchange it.

Also for those you who DO pay for television programing and are feeling the pinch of those pesky gas prices you may want to consider sacrificing your cable or satellite subscription and giving the old rabbit ears a shot! If your area is like mine you may be getting around 20 to 26 digital channels with a clear reception broadcast for free right over the air. Granted you may not enjoy all of that programing and that is a paltry sum compared to the 60 to 100+ channels people get with a subscription service but in all honesty who can say that cable has been a good thing in their lives? Not to mention with all of the streaming content you can view online and so many laptops and computers with video out jacks that you can hook up to your TV sets you may be surprised at how little you miss that cable subscription and much happier your wallet will be.

That's not all either! Imagine what will happen if even a modest percentage of viewers dump subscription TV for broadcast TV. If even 20% of subscribers dropped their service in favor of broadcast television you'd probably see more stations broadcast over the air for free to try and compete for the extra viewers and subscription prices for cable would probably drop in an attempt to lure viewers back.

Sure, you can't tivo past the commercials in broadcast TV but I can come up with some other suggestions on what to do during commercial breaks if those commercials get on your nerves . . . :P
