dionysos I thought it was "synesthesia"...

The amazing thing to me is that synesthetes generally agree on a color palette. For example, if one sees a b flat minor diminished chord as turquoise, most others do too...

oldephebe so a synesthete who is a musician basically has perfect pitch - am i correct in assuming that? 030815
...
oldephebe because if you extend the reasoning or extrapolate how the synesthete aprehends the notes visually then not only does a relative tonal memory develop by also a vehicle for perfectly matching the note or wave amplitude/vibration with the visually percieved phenomena..

just a thought

oE anyone?..maybe this is just another indice of my penchant for esoterica and not being able to summon up one granule of interest..in said inquiry..still though.. 040108

neesh no i think synesthesia is fascinating. also i am slightly synesthetic (hence i find it fascinating, very self-involved). it's not just sound and colour, it's all senses, and also feelings. that was something that really interested me about L'étranger, considering Meursault as autistic, so a green sky would make him feel peaceful, and it being uncomfortably hot and bright might make him shoot someone.

i have a strong sense of aural harmony (and visual etc as well), so much so that disharmony quite disturbs me, but i dunno if i'm pitch perfect. in fact, not entirely sure what it means to be pitch perfect. i'm quite good at transcribing things from one instrument to another (guitar to piano/flute, and piano to flute) in my head, but then somehow can never quite find the right chords or the right notes when it comes to playing it.

i'm a very good whistler though.

sorry to not at all answer your question, OE, but there you go.

oE not atall neesh, I found your take on it kinda intriguing..the whole intersection of emotions and synesthiesia and it's concurrent manifestation(s). Umm the whole transposing in the head thing..when you are arranging are you anywhere near an instrument so that you can at least get the root chord or tonic?...umm..i find that when i try to transcribe stuff out of my head..i'm usually about a major second or minor third off..interesting though..maybe if you carried a pitch pipe with you..very intriguing.. 040108

neesh well tbh i'm not a very good musician, that might have something to do with it. maybe i'll find it easier when i've been playing for a couple of years. the thing is, i can even visualise it in my head, see myself playing exactly the right notes, but still i can't tell what notes they are. come to think of it, i do that for a lot of things. like i'll vaguely remember a part of a book, but instead of remembering what i'm looking for, i'll remember the shape of the words on the page, and about how far down the page the section i'm looking for is. i can remember exactly what it looks like, but not see the words. in the same way, i can see me playing it, but not see the notes. quite frustrating. 040108
