fyn gula marque: "what is the marox pass?"

fyn: "many things as the situation dictates, but above all it is the smile of a dog."

mario: "what the fuck is that suppossed to mean? stop trying to be so, erm, ....enigmatic."

fyn: "a dog on a chain can still smile. he has found happiness in captivity."

marque: "what is he a prisoner of?"

fyn: "his own life. have you ever seen a dog who has pulled his chain from the post?"

marque: "yes. he gets snagged again and again and becomes trapped, only in new places."

fyn: "exactly."

mario: "what does the fucking marox pass have to do with it?

fyn: "with the pass the dog never tries to break his chain. he never questions his captivity. he finds life within it."

mario: "sounds fucked up to me. i'm not a prisoner to anything."

fyn: "to gravity you are."

marque: "to love you are."

mario: "you mean i have to love?"

fyn: "you must have your feet on the ground."

marque: "love is the weightless chain."

the silence hovered in the air like woodsmoke that doesn't sting the eyes but is the pleasant fragrance we use to remind ourselves how wonderful life can be. we find it later as a memory to return us to happiness.

when the recordings ended, not a word was spoken. a stephen malkmus song began playing and it seemed an intermission of some sort was taking place, not because it was planned. (the dave mckean illustrated programs said nothing about an intermission) it seemed more that a pause was needed to simply allow these conversations to germinate within the understanding. maylay knew this was copello's cry for help because when
fyn gula's story is usually told, the st.john dialogues are rarely included.

"copello wants the marox pass back. that's obvious." maylay whispered to nabiscus.

with the silence now broken, nylem uttered a cry, not loud, but everyone heard it like a distant siren in the middle of the night. it was if a knife was plunged deep into his heart and he had time only to allow the final breath of his life to issue forth before he dropped dead. and just when they heard it, all those whose heads were turned saw him run, saw him jump onto the back of the draegyn. it seemed startled, but its responsiveness and obedience were quick out of a snoring sleep. it flapped its heavy black wings and lifted into the chilly night air like a silent helicopter.

"where the fuck is he going?" nimbia said.
"to protect the pass...wherever he has it hidden." maylay said. and he wondered about his own marox pass, how safe it even was.
