maybe because people just don't know how to spell. a_lot is two words, not one. If you spell it as one word then it has two "l"s Allot meaning :to assign as a share or portion or to distribute by or as if by lot.

language is constantly changing. If a lot of young people are typing "alot" alot, in a generation it will become a new word. We'll see it appear in dictionaries within our lifetimes, I betcha.

AACK! No, no, no! It is NOT two word. "allot" means to portion out parts of the whole to a group of recipients as needed, typically evenly. Oh, wait... you mean "a LOT", as in a surveyed parcel of land. I see. Nevermind, that is two words.

That's right. I don't want to talk about "a lot" (ie. a parcel of land). However, I've enjoyed this conversation "alot" (That's the way I was taught!) Thanks.

I've heard the same tune from teachers discouraging use of the word "ain't" which is now right there in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. To the teachers I give the middle finger right along with those who knit-picked the -in my opinion- proper use of double-negatives through emphasis(ex. "I don't want to just sit here and *not* do something about it, but I don't know what I *should* do either") I agree with those who predict it will be a part of our language soon enough, just listen to when it's used in a sentence, it sounds like 'allot'. I can't wait ot be able to use it guilt free in microsoft word.

however, "ain't" is also regarded by Merriam-Webster as improper usage, i.e., SLANG.

You people are pissing me off. Seriously! I've won multiple spelling Bee's since 4th Grade and still hate seeing the phrase spelled a lot. I prefer alot. It looks better & is fundamentally correct. "A lot", is an actual pile of something. "Alot" is a huge amount of anything. I'm one of the most anal individuals when it comes to correct spellings of words, but I have utter disregard for the bashing of the word "ALOT" I'm a Millenium Kidd & can't wait to see "ALOT" in the dictionary. Idiots! Leave it be.
