u24 I don't think he was. In fact, I don't know what inspired me to start this blathe... there's no evidence at all that he was, afaik. 040125

oldephebe No, no you're not that far off the mark. I'm not sholar or anything..but wasn't one of the main pillars (the only pillar aside from his exasperating virtuosity of declamation and "wordy" exhibitionism..arguments evading his advesaries requests for him to validate his contentions..argumentation that intertwined the two tongues in an inextricable impasse once the interlocutor surrendered to the entropy of Socrates demands for qulification and definition. To Socrates nothing anyone said was true in and of itself, once someones words were subjected to the abacus of Socrates ironic and ultimately deconstructionist dessications.

To the schizophrenic, nothing is true, everything is suspect, the literal is a lie and the truth silently disintegrates into unfiltered allegory, the emblematic, ominous overtones of the figurative. So from this premonitory we can begin to seriously address your provocative inquiry U-24.

So yeah for him irony and by extention the dissonance and potential of fallacy comprised the fucrum of his many fulminations...

later,

that was a great question...

oldephebe Without clinically qualifying the differentials of neurosis, irony, perversion and schizophrenia as it relates to Socrates. (mostly because i am not qualified to clinically adress those questions, i'm quite confident that socrates was not a schizophrenic.)

For Socrates who may have inhabitied the sphere of neurosis in his aspiration to perfect irony/perfect exasperation of the Other. Was the goal to journey together toward a consensus of objective truth/merit. Or was the object to perfect a debilitating and exasperating architecture of reasoning?

u24 explaining his silence [sorry, oldephebe, I lack the knowledge to reply adequately. wait until next year, when I will surely have an opinion.] 040311

oldephebe well if you read through some of the platonic socratic hagiography..plato reveals that socrates often referred to what he called his daimon - his talismanic guide i guess that kept him firmly moored to his exasperating dialectic...so...

extrapolate at will..but be wary in presuming that something that contains or meets the test of being logical does not neccessarily constitute truth or the quality of being true...now i think it is time to take a leisurely stroll, figuratively, amongst the contemplative and mostly black bear shorn pines of rural pennsburg pa..

...
oldephebe and really u24 don't worry about it..i'm guessing the objective value ascertaing wether or not socrates was mentally ill or not is not exactly the kind of datum people are ripping their shirts off and throwing flagrant elbows to figuratively bask in that shallow and highly conjecturally based pond/peice of esoterica..this sentence needs to be streamlined...

andru235 if he was, maybe we at last must address the possibility that schizophrenia (et. al) serves a natural and necessary social role in humans

but then, that would reveal psychology to be the psycho-logue it really is, and the cognitive dissonance would likely be resolved only by professional denial

oldephebe Hmmmmm

andru235 oldephebe, once again you summed it up (perhaps without intending)

if i may paraphrase:

"are you saying that the field of psychology is ... oops: gotta go"

that is, more or less, what i am saying:

"the field of psychology is 'oops'."

"the field of psychology [has] gotta go."
