takeshi kitano, my favourite director... well the director of my favourite film. and i don't know if he wrote the music for the lily chou-chou songs too, but they're incredible. some favourite lines: "The things you hold dear, friends, family, lovers, hurt you the most. You live with that." "In my darkened room, arms around my knees; that's all I remember" "The first to make ethereal music were Debussy and Eric Satie" (my two favourite composers) "A helpless soul now screams without a voice" (perfect pentameter, in english, not so sure it would be in japanese...) "I hate everyone. But I like it here." (appropriate for blather?) "How wonderful will be the end of all things" "Black tears. Blue smiles. I am transparent. A world without colour." one thing that annoyed me about kill bill is that they used a lily song and didn't accredit it, nor put it on the soundtrack. grrr...

"dolls" just might be his masterpiece. he's called it his most violent film, though there's essentially no physical violence that takes place on-screen. emotional violence. that's what it is. miho kanno's performance is a thing of wonder. she conveys so much while barely speaking a word. it's a beautiful, punishing film, and i haven't been able to watch it again in seven years. it lives in the same range as a few cassavetes films, like "a woman under the influence". a little too close to the bone to experience on anything approaching a regular basis. i'll return one day, when i feel i can handle a second go-round, and let it destroy me all over again.
