"we move through the sacred constantly yet remain oblivious to its presence except during those rare, unexpected moments when we are suddenly shocked and shaken awake, compelled to perceive and acknowledge. during those brief moments, we know with bone-centered conviction who we are; with breath- and -pulse clarity where we have come from; and with earth-solid certainty to what it is we owe all our allegiance, all our heart, all our soul, all our love." ~patiann rogers, from 'surprised by the sacred' as it appeared in utne "here comes my husband now," thora valentine said. she was reacting to a noise that she and the madrill heard that was coming from outside the garden shoppe and from the back. "he's an origamian paper airplane pilot," she said, explaining the origin of the sound. he flys mostly for fun, but today was for extra money. there was a couple on their honeymoon looking for a memorable thrill." the madrill was not surprised by this news. origamians, that is folded-paperpeople, were a race of kemulyans breathed into existence in the fifteenth year of the god greta. they were in all aspects, normal, just as any of us are. interacial marriage was just as conventional. kemulyans placed their focus on understanding the depths of love, therefore prejudice was never an issue. "let's go out and meet him. he'll hitch up the cart and take us to get you stitched up all proper." she took the madrill by her good hand and began to lead her. "do you think i can put my bag in your walk-in cooler while were gone?" the madrill asked. she realized puppertwinkle's flesh was in danger of rotting to the point of uselessness. refrigeration would restore it. "sure," thora said. "follow me." she led her over to the cooler, pulled open the heavy wooden door where the fragrance of orchids, orange bossom, forced hyacinth, jasmine, rose, stargazer lily, narcissus, and gardenia fused together and nearly filled the madrill's nostrils with intoxication. "whoa!" she said, with a sharp intake of breath. "that is quite an overwhelming olfactory greeting!" "oh yes," thora said, smiling. she reached for the madrill's bag as she lifted it off her shoulder. "it is defiantely one of the many highlights that accompany working with flowers." the offensive odor of puppertwinkle's flesh was swallowed up the floral bouquet as they both stuffed the bag into the only available place upon a slatted wooden shelf next to a few flats of vigorously growing wheatgrass. thora sold the vitamin rich product wholesale to plasimento. he then juiced it and sold it in one ounce and two ounce cups to his health-seeking customers. thora, of course, was curious what was really in the bag, as she sterotypically knew madrills to be involved in black-market dealings. and perhaps that throws out the notion that kemulyans are non-prejudiced. in any case, she planned on finding out the truth, not as a detective, but as a friend, so she could help anyway she could. thora was very cool. and just wait until you meet her husband, twinkletoes mcgruder.
