The fact is, if you translate to dollar value the amount we get from the biosphere, it just about doubles the gross world product. So to try and switch to completely artificially produced goods would be suicide. And there are other issues involved. Most medecinal breakthroughs occur when a substance is discovered in an organism of some sort and then then it is researched on a molecular level and not starting at the molecular level in a laboratory. And on top of that....why destroy things when they still have much to offer, before we even know what our replacement efforts are going to be like? And with animals...does it make more sense to maintain a reasonable harvest where production and regrowth of the "resources" is allowed to at the very least be in equilibrium with the spending of said resources? Would you rather drive an animal to extinction for the temporary rise in stock or keep forever a profitable, controlled economic ecosystem.
