Life Magazine: "Never has American prestige in Europe been lower" New York Times: "Mutual Resentment of Troops" -- November 11 "Americans Hated" -- December 2 "Mounting Bitterness Over Our Occupation Practices" -- December 11 These are headlines from . . . World War II. (!) American Deaths numbered in the thousands. For example, in only three days, from November 8-11, 1942, FRENCH troops killed 526 Americans. Why were we fighting Germans when they hadn't attacked us...yet...and didn't have the atomic bomb....yet? Why were we fighting French, for whom we were dying to liberate their county?!? Sure glad Americans weren't so selfish back then. Glad they had morals and a spine, and understood the dangers of appeasement. Are we so ignorant today? I fear we are.

It's not like any different behavior would help us. Note that other countries are hated, too. According to press reports last year, the admirable Norwegians are "puzzled" to learn that their sincerity, good works, and progressive attitudes don't buy them protection from Islamo-fascists. Norwegians, proud of their role as a global peacemaker, were puzzled and concerned Wednesday that a leading Al Qaeda member singled out their country in a terrorist threat. The Arab television station Al-Jazeera aired an audio tape purportedly by Ayman al-Zawahri, the top lieutenant of Usama bin Laden, urging renewed attacks on the United States, Britain and Australia, which participated in the war against Iraq. But the inclusion of the Scandinavian nation in his warning drew questions. Norway didn't support the war in Iraq but sent troops and fighter planes to help oust Al Qaeda and the Taliban forces from Afghanistan. "We were surprised," Norwegian Foreign Ministry spokesman Karsten Klepsvik said, adding that experts were racing to try to figure out why Al Qaeda would want to threaten Norway. Changing conditions require changing tactics.
