Quintessensual Yesterday, while editing a story for a woman, I learned the following tidbit about women's view of the institution of marriage: Every girl wants to marry a prince charming, and almost all of them end up marrying frogs.

This prompted some questioning from me, in a feeble effort to moderate this woman's harsh view of the world as we know it.

I asked what will there be for lasses to marry now that frogs are becoming extinct?

I surmised that one possibility would be that the fraction of them that marry princes charming would increase. She thought this to be unlikely, because princes are also becoming extinct and few if any princes have ever been charming.

She was willing to concede that the vast majority of princes, although uncharming, are rarely frogs but are mostly gar fish.

Another possibility I thought would be that the institution of marriage will disappear. Then, in the absence of frogs and princes charming, women could enter into "committed relationships," presumably of undefined duration, with whatever they would want, including males or females of species on the comeback, like wrestlers, alligators, starlings, and bald eagles.

The woman said she would favor that and would undoubtedly, being straight, seek a male bald eagle. But she would not under any circumstances marry the bird. She said that earlier in her young life she had been married to a flaccid frog and would not risk either of those things again - being married or flaccidity.
