the bastard fire alarm went off at 2AM. granted i was still awake, but it still managed to annoy me a great deal. the fire safty guy came to the building, left, and then came back. we waited outside for half an hour. and if there was a real fire, almost half of the residents would have burned up in it because they're too lazy to get out of bed. at least they all got fined! just one of the many joys of living with other college freshman...

Fined? I've never heard of that- but a good motivational force. I never went out for the fire drills. Almost never, unless my roommate dragged me out, or if I felt like using it as an excuse to socialize with the neighbors. Sometimes I would go out and head for the bus stop to visit a friend. One time the campus television network interviewed me about it. I told them fire drills should be discontinued. It is the equality of crying wolf. Now if the fire drill never went off, and suddenly at 2AM you are awoken by it, you'd freak out and get the hell out of there. Because you'd know it was serious. Additionally, I was never taught the proper/quickest way to exit the building during the drill, making the whole thing pointless. I just went out whichever exit seemed most appropriate at the time. And all of us would huddle srunched up against the building anyway, so if it were to explode, we'd of been dead. And it really pissed me off that the very same people who were doing the most bitching and complaining and whining about standing outside at 4AM when I have an 8 o'clock final the next morning were the very same people who had caused the alarm to go off in the first place, because they didn't know how to open a window when smoking a cigarette.

sometimes the only way i can rememeber it's summer is to hear the fire alarms blare from up the street. one would think it was quite bothersome to live so close to the fire station, but i suppose it can equate to living next to a waterfall. yet the sounds of my comfort turn into someone else's pain.

once, I was in england, and the fire alarm went off late into the night, while I was watching music videos in the room and my mom was still down at the hotel pub. I evacuated the building and met my mom in the parking lot and we shivered together until the hotel management declared it an false alarm. it was one of the many fun experiences of the uk.
