nikki would laugh with you, she would giggle, and even gossip like other women or men for that matter, but she would not hug you. perhaps if she had drank too much cognac she would hug you, but it would not feel like it did when other people hugged you. in that matter, she was like having dinner with a well dressed beautiful woman (which she was - very particular about how she dressed, and yet very uneccessarily so as she couldn't hide the attractiveness of her features with even hideous clothing) who responded perfectly to every topic of conversation, was brilliant fascinating interesting, and seemed enthralled with you - laughed, made self conscious pensive eyes, touched your hand lightly; but when you went home with her, you went to make love to her, and she was a ghost. worse than that, she looked at you as if you were the ghost. it was not that the ice princess did not make love to men or women, in fact she made love to men and women quite avidly, nor was it that she had not loved before, but rather that like her name suggested her love was ice. her love and most of her other emotions were like glaciers - even when they were massive, they were slow moving enough to avoid. what it was was that she never rooted her love down deeper than her honest appraisal of what was best for her situation. love could be a factor, but it could never be an exception to the process. it was granted tenatively and taken away the same. and once her mind was made up she carried her actions out as if the love had never existed, which to her indeed it no longer did as she had a new plan of actions. so when she decided it would suit her to live in tunisia for three years, it did not matter that there was a strong, striving, man of industry who wanted nothing more than to give everything to her, and he broke down like a newspaper boy in front of a ceo. still, sometimes you would see momentary indecisiveness, her face would move suddenly displeased like the pop in suddenly warmed ice. in this way she was like a lizard who leaves its children behind because it knows it will eat them out of hunger if it stays, but looks back as it leaves and wonders how delicious they might've been.
