first of all, i want to know why this time of history was ripped out of my "story of america" textbook? next, i want to say 'hell yeah!' to the cinematic return of daniel day lewis. he is phenomenal as bill the butcher. he sets every scene he's in ablaze with raw talent. however, leo seemed constricted and cameron diaz is way too goofy and contemporary to even be considered in a serious role. too bad because their performances turn the film into something mediocre when it should have been an epic and a sure oscar winner. still...go see it. there's way too much good about it to wait for it on dvd. it's one of those films you feel like you've time-traveled and the only way to step into it is to see it on the silver screen and hear the knife throws against the wood in dolby. plus, there's a lot of blood on the snow and some nudity and the authenticity of costumes are incredible. daniel day lewis dandied up in a stovetop hat and plaid pants is a must see for everyone. and of course, you have to see leo get a blade brand across his cheek. but most cool about it--- there is no computer magic, just pure mammoth, hand-built sets, and breathtaking craftsmanship by one of the true cinematic genuises. and there's little if any of that left.

2 things i loved about that movie are the costumes and the sets. i want to start wearing plad pants, a striped shirt, and suspenders from now on. and the sets, oh god the sets. they were remarkable. you really do feel like you are there. and your right about the computer effects, there are too many (badley done) movies that use (even worse) computer graphics to make it seem "more realistic", but any one over 12 can see that they are animated, but none of that on this movie. the only computer efficts were (i think) the cannons on the ships, and even those were done verry well. i think im gunna watch it again this weekend

it is obvious how hard scorsese was struck by the 9/11. sadly but true, the story proved it. i loved the butcher. i would have loved him even more if more scenes related to knives were shown. lame how he scar-ed leonardo. lame the shot of new york at the end. lame the u2 song.
