'in the same way that corporations conquered newspapers, radio and television, artzt promised they would take the internet. in the final words of his speech, chairman artzt exulted: 'we may not get another opportunity like his in our lifetime. let's grab all this new technology in our teeth once again and turn it into a bonanza for advertising!' responding to artzt's call, the advertising industry founded the coalition for advertising supported information and entertainment (CASIE) in 1994, a task force whose core mission was to guarantee that into the future 'advertising revenue must be a key funding source for information and entertainment in the evolving world of media.' within a decade, advertisers owned the internet.* *CASIE was also instrumental in thwarting legislation to tax advertising on the internet. this factor hints at an innovative avenue of attack for mental environmentalists - local initiatives to put a tax on advertising. money from this tax could be used to fund public schools, libraries and non-commercial publications.' - micah white

not to mention that the things i hate most on the internet (social media, facebook especially) that i think are destroying our culture and government, wouldn't even exist without advertising. fuckerberg wouldn't be one of the richest men on the planet for stealing someone else's idea if he wasn't being paid by advertisers. patanjali told the yogis of his time that the way we end suffering is to cut down the tree of suffering by the root. advertising is the root of our out of control capitalist culture. funny how i still come to blather almost everyday and i still have never made a facebook page.

Commercialization and consumerization are the two faces of the evil that grips our world. That humans are seen as and predominately behave as consumers, enslaves us as passive recipients of commercialization. Do we have a prayer?

I am a very occasional poster on Facebook. My last post was: Dear Facebook, Now that we have a private moment together, I would like to discuss your value to our culture, We both know that consumerism has been a driving force in our culture and economy for quite a while now. Your alchemy of transforming consumers into advertisers of themselves has reinvigorated advertisers everywhere. Now that we are all consuming and selling there is no need for the sacred. Congratulations!
