okay, i'm avoiding the question. what is an artist? art·ist n. 1. one, such as a painter, sculptor, or writer, who is able by virtue of imagination and talent or skill to create works of aesthetic value, especially in the fine arts. 2. a person whose work shows exceptional creative ability or skill: You are an artist in the kitchen. 3. one, such as an actor or singer, who works in the performing arts. 4. one who is adept at an activity, especially one involving trickery or deceit: a con artist. i would say an artist, in the most simple terms, is anyone who feels the need to express. most artists do so through creating. some use the art of speech [william carlos williams heard common speech as poetry and expressed it as such, sort of a found poem]. it's always hard to put the term artist into a category because there are so many different types of artists. even a mathmetician dances with the numbers; this is his art. art and artists are as ambiguous as success. it varies from person to person

i applaud you, jane, even for attempting an answer because it's a question as your italian suggested, is impossible to prove completely true in this world. there is only right, no wrong. it does vary from person to person, in observation, objectivity, subjectivity, and multitudes of application. there has been a recent explosion of the appreciation of folk art. henry darger and adolf wolfli to just name two. thank you for your response and for mentioning william carlos williams. he is an excellent inspiration for all of us here. by the way, what is the translation for staria, periocche, and giammai? i'm so rusty, it's been too long since our days in sienna.

i don't know italian so i can't give you a literal translation of those words but i can give you a translation of the epigraph. it is from dante's inferno, canto xxvii, 61-66. [spoken by guido da montefeltro when asked to identify himself] " if i thought my answer were given to anyone who could ever return to the world, this flame would shake no more; but since none ever did return above from this depth, if what i hear is true, without fear of infamy i answer thee.
