When he heard his first symphony being performed, he hid on the fire escape and cried...the dischords were awful. There had only been one rehearsal and it was too late too cancel. The musicians at rehearsal had even complained...afterward, for weeks he hardly moved from his couch, but he recovered, and his fantasy on a theme by Paganini i could never thank him enough for (Oscar Peterson once lit on the couch for weeks too...to cool his ego a little his father played a recording of Art Tatum playing "tiger rag"...."Hey Pop, those guys are pretty good" said Oscar....."no son, that was one man." He argued but finally could see it was really true.. yea, he had real aversion to piano for awhile)

(in fact, according to his own testimony, Oscar didn't move from the couch for about three weeks.)

I've got to admit I'm a horrid romantic, that rhapsody on a theme by Paganini gets me every time...

rach baby rules..i have a weird kind of affinity for russian composers..i think its because they are able to translate a certain slavic kind of spirit into there music. I can feel the wind cutting across my face..the desolation of endless white seas of frozen snow..even the strange kind of fatalism and hardiness that russians from the pre-perestoika era exuded..and even the more recent past exude in the smallest of gestures. (I used to do business with some of them..wholesale distributorships and all that..and i gotta say they were really amused by my boyscout sense of propriety and accountability..very enlightening experience) prokoviev rules as well..i think he was a chemist before he turned to serious composition..i could be mistaken
