man, elton will hear some phrase and just take off with it; the most recent being "river otter." for a goddamn two or three hours, he'll just say every once in a while "river otter." i say, go look up symptoms of autism, and we look, and there it is, echolalia. additionally and coincidentally a cool word in essence. echolalia echolalia echolalia..

i've got a feeling that autistic children are talking from a higher level... that is why we think there is something wrong with them... they may find it difficult to become emotionally attached because they feel no-one understands them? it's a question in my mind... i wonder ? they can be quite disruptive though.. concerntration span is limited because their brain is working fast... maybe ? what do you think... guess work ... i don't know it seems to me people behave according to how you treat them... if you put a label on them.. and say... "you are abnormal to society" then maybe you are creating more distance for them... they become more alone in life. what do you think ?

i think in most cases, autistic kids only repeat the things they think are cool. i sang ethan the sunflower song and he got a big smile on his face and repeated the end 'ti do' 'ti do' 'ti do' over and over. ethan can tell you how to get to the nearest mcdonalds (french fries are one of his favorite foods and one of the only things he will eat). ethan can also disassemble his electronic toys with a screwdriver, take the batteries out, and then put them all back together so that they work again. whenever he sees my grandpa's minivan leaving the house, he runs to the front door with his shoes. years ago, he learned how to tell us he was hungry by getting what he wanted to eat out of the cabinet and bringing it to us. the list of words he can spell is amazing and growing everyday. ethan is four. he is amazingly affectionate for someone with severe autism. he likes to crawl up in my lap if there aren't too many people around.
