"I remember throwin punches around
And preachin from my chair."

The answer for those that don't really care or know is "yes."
The answer for those who prefer the Reader's Digest version of the truth is "no."
The following answer is for the foolhardy.

It's interesting that the "yes" mentioned above is shared also by only the truly enlightened. The patient, dilligent few who are able to still their minds will become one with everything, thus merging self and knowledge of self. Unity. "I celebrate myself,/And what I assume you shall assume,/For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you." Or so we're told, but I have yet to get there--have you? "I got mad knowledge of self. Ya gotta git with knowledge of self."

For the rest of us, however...

My mind first imagines the dolphin riding the pressure wave, just a step ahead. That's who we think we are, while the true self lags behind slightly--our shadow as we face light. We hold an ideal. Moving towards it--our motivation.

I also imagine the other times and places and people that have remnants of me. We all leave parts of ourselves scattered around. Are those not part of who we are? And yet there is little chance that we can keep track. Frozen or transformed in our absence.

The converse, too, is true. We derive who we are from other sources. They change without our knowing, and we only become aware when we re-engage, and realign.

Additionally, there are many parts hidden within. The Enemy Within (and a friend or two). They assert themselves when the barometer shifts. But knowing them takes massive introspection and honesty.

Ultimately, it's very difficult for us to know who we are; our boundaries are considerably less well-defined than we normally acknowledge. There will always be small gaps between the process of awareness and the process of attainment. As we grow and age, and if we are patient and present, the rift between who we are and who we imagine ourselves to be grows asymtotically smaller.

"Who are you, who who, who who?"
