The first time, I totally missed the irony. I at first thought "why end it like that? (No spoiler) this was supposed to be a musical, damnit! Happy songs!..." The second time, it clicked. The reason wht it ended as such was to be completely different than any other musical. The songs truly weren't all that happy, and the storyline itself would made Sinatra cry....
