Dear heavenly Father Thinking back to when I was like The drugs ran off with our mother And the world tried to have it's way with me But you made me a tough nut to crack And I can see that it wasnt all cap You took my hand (And a strap to my back if I needed that) You're the one who always gave me a home The little loner orphan boy was really never alone Had beef with the people that were fostering me Spitting truth in a land of hypocrisy It's so confusing for a spirit trying to get the gist Of the rules in a land of materialists Got caught with the Sunday school payback When I was twelve because they said you gotta have cash Bagging all the presents on my Christmas list Dead broke. You let me know you weren't having it With a hand on my arm like a slap to the face But you never ever barely let me catch a case And when the tragic few Would hurt me through and through You made them pay their due Exodus 22:22 Until the bitter end You're more than just a friend Abba Pater it's true What I have I owe to you So I'm getting my life together, Lord Its getting better, Lord And though I dont drink much, I'm going to give it up The weed too, (though I never seem to get enough) I'm gonna take a walk in the light of the Sun Gonna try to make me peace with everyone Gonna have more patience when I'm running behind Always keep you at the front of my mind And keep trying Try to give all praise through the life I live Try to open up my heart and keep it positive And when the cash don't come around properly Recall I learned a lot more from the poverty, possibly. Though I dont have the words to give you praise enough I'm gonna roll the stone And watch you raise it up So when you raise my cup Because I've stayed enough Maybe you'll give your son a chance To try to make it up.
