A few friends have sugeested I should consider the option, but even they have offered a few "warnings" as it relates to the potential side-effects somebody else warned me that some meds change your brain chemistry so much that once you're on them, there is no getting off without ending up worse off then when i started is this true? anyone?

It's a bit of a roulette, like any art or science project. If you are patient and work to get it right, it is well worth it. Some people find the right med for them right away and some people suffer while the figure it out or give up. Generally, people give up before they have time for the side effects to wear off and the med to work correctly. There are meds that will kick your ass with withdrawl unless you do it the way your physician advises, but eventually you go back to how you were. Some people, through therapy or other forms of growth, will be better off when they quit. If you take meds before your body is fully grown, it may have a permanent effect on your. The court is out to lunch on that one. It can't be any worse than all the drinking and drugs many kids are up to because of their depression anyway, is my theory.

Another way to look at it, is that it's like any disability. You have to learn how to live with it. Antidepressants still may help you accomplish this in the long run. Some people say "if you had a bacterial infection, would you not take antibiotics?" and claim it's the same thing. (some people would answer no to that question, but we're all different) Some people claim that mental illness is not the same as bodily illness. It's up to you what you really want to do.
