as long as he could remember, saumboo loved the cinema. when he was a little, nappy-headed boy freshly rescued from the sudanese conflict and fostered under the loving guardianship of king mal's refugee tutorial program, he was often escorted to the art house theatre within the kingdom along with his culturally stimulated brothers and sisters. he was fascinated by the european directors like pier paolo pasolini, frederico fellini, bernardo bertolucci, francois truffaut, and ingar bergman, and the japanese work of akira kurosawa, often using these foreign films to hone his language skills. he also enjoyed the more contemporary vision of baz luhrman, steven soderbergh, christopher nolan, david fincher, wes anderson, p.t. anderson, tom tykwer, todd solondz, and jean-pierre jeunet. it just wasn't the movies themselves that gave him pleasure. he was also enamored by several other individual elements that made up the complete cinematic experience. there was the general buzz of discovering the film even existed and then reading the reviews online or in magazines, followed by the desire of wanting to go and take someone with you. first it's the pre-film espresso, next the flashing lights of the marquee. once in the theatre the enticing, stomach growling smell of over-salted popcorn hits you. rows of neatly stacked, colorful boxes of candy, bubbly soda drinks, and outrageously priced concessions tempt you to spend your hard earned coinage and green paper. (saumboo always brought his own organic chocolate or clif bar) there's the finely dressed ushers tearing your ticket and guiding you to your seat, the lighted aisles, the cushy seats, sticky floor, dolby sound, and of course the silver screen itself, larger than life. one particular moment of the entire feast of flick sensations has been intentionally omitted because it was this solitary event that saumboo personally admitted as his absolute favorite. and that was the previews of coming attractions, that is the trailers of the films that would soon be playing. and so, when saumboo looked into the mahogany scope once more, he thought about films, wondering if he would ever see one again. and this is what he saw. the white words on the black screen accompanied by craig armstrong's stirring soundtrack read as follows: "une prevision des prochaines attractions de la future vie du saumboo, l'homme en pierre" (a preview of the coming attractions of the future life of saumboo, the man of stone) perhaps now you know why it nearly gave him a heart attack.
