That is to say, a town that has a sign on the road on the way in that advises non-white or Jewish passers-by to be sure they are gone by sundown, lest they get what they have coming to them. As if to say that it is not... the town's fault if, say, its citizens gang up and lynch the out-of-towner. Or maybe the police chase them out of town, or throw them in the tank for the night. Notable Sundown Towns included Appleton WI, Edina MN, and the entirety of small town Illinois. Certainly the south had its share of racist and discriminatory laws on the books, and perhaps after Reconstruction and during the_great_migration, Northern towns were the ones putting up signs, saying kindly get out. Quantifying a Sundown Town is often looking at its demographic population between censuses. If a black minority drops to under 1%, it is probably on purpose because of racist housing laws, like in Edina MN, that actually made it illegal for already-existing landlords to rent or sell property to black people. Milwaukee has some of the worst profiling laws in the country and it gets worse and worse the closer you get to Canada. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is horrendous toward any minority be it racial, sexual identity, sexual orientation, or religious.
