sundown_town
silentbob Any American town that is white on purpose. That is to say, a town that has a sign on the road on the way in that advises non-white or Jewish passers-by to be sure they are gone by sundown, lest they get what they have coming to them. As if to say that it is not... the town's fault if, say, its citizens gang up and lynch the out-of-towner. Or maybe the police chase them out of town, or throw them in the tank for the night.

Notable Sundown Towns included Appleton WI, Edina MN, and the entirety of small town Illinois. Certainly the south had its share of racist and discriminatory laws on the books, and perhaps after Reconstruction and during the_great_migration, Northern towns were the ones putting up signs, saying kindly get out.

Many travelers were disappeared during this time. A publisher started selling the motorist Green_book as a guide for friendly places where a person could go without fear.

Quantifying a Sundown Town is often looking at its demographic population between censuses. If a black minority drops to under 1%, it is probably on purpose because of racist housing laws, like in Edina MN, that actually made it illegal for already-existing landlords to rent or sell property to black people. COOL!!!

This means that there technically could be sundown towns today; mostly homogeneous areas where the police are extra attentive to seeing black folks out, etc.

unhinged there's no maybes about it. i lived in a town ( shorewood WI ) where my nonwhite friends wouldn't drive me home at bar time because there was a very real possibility of being targeted by cops ( driving while brown ) and legal soberity wasn't garaunteed.

i have received hostile glares by whole groups of white people in small towns in WI and rest stops in IN for daring to exist in their space with my black best friend. racism has been alive and well in the northern midwest for as long as i can remember. i have always laughed at the idea that anerica is a post_racial society.

arwyn If you're looking for racial equality, Wisconsin has nothing to recommend itself. Milwaukee has some of the worst profiling laws in the country and it gets worse and worse the closer you get to Canada. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is horrendous toward any minority be it racial, sexual identity, sexual orientation, or religious. It's embarrassing to know I came from such a blatant hive of intolerance. 190127

unhinged after the 2010 census milwaukee was the MOST segregated city in america. it definitely doesn't have anything to offer in terms of racial equality; it is stuck in another time and place. but i've written about my racial experiences elsewhere ( race_in_america ) 190127
