Kate A thought:

"If I have told you these details about the asteroids, and made note of its number for you, it is on account of the grown-ups and their ways. Grown-ups love figures. When you tell them that you have made a new friend, they never ask you any questions about essential matters. They never say to you, "What does his voice sound like? What games does he love best? Does he collect butterflies?" Instead, they demand: "How old is he? How many brothers has he? How much does he weigh? How much money does his father make?" Only from these figures do they think they have learned anything about him."

User24 Kate, I agree.

However, in order to understand things, you need to look at the lowest common denominator; if I was studying an alien species, the first thing I'd look for would be similarities to other species, likewise, when studying other humans, it's important to be able to see the world through their eyes, as previously stated on blatherskite_inside_story, one can, of course, obtain this information through deep comtemplation of blathes, however, as stated in sarcastic_delimiters, it is sometimes hard to accurately portray emotion and most of all tone, therefore by reading raw thoughts (as blather is close to), it is hard, in some cases, to understand the individual's viewpoint; by looking at simple things like music taste, upbringing, social groups, favorite X, star sign, even, one can ascertain the perspective that that blatherskite is coming from. So while they are generally mindless and purely for 'fun', they can serve a useful purpose.

User24 btw, my idea of fun is not wading through pages of "hey, I'm 5 foot3, too" crap..

But, each to their own.
