In today’s society, I don’t believe in heroes. I guess I don’t believe in heroes in any society, time, or place. Heroes are always ordinary people who do something that seems impossible. Obviously, if they accomplished it, it never was impossible, just difficult. As children we’re told that we can do anything we set our minds to. The people society labels as “heroes” are people who followed through with that idea, and anybody could do what they had done in a difficult situation. So, if we’re all capable of doing something, why put the person who got recognized for it on a pedestal?

on a show called "it takes a thief," two ex-burglars stage a break-in, then help the home-owners improve security. the family sits in a van and watches with one of the thieves as the other breaks in, ransacks their house, throwing things everywhere, stripping anything of value without regard for sentiment, acting the most indifferent predator. he steals ptes and piggybanks. and then he meets the family, walks them through what was taken, grinning all the while. their stuff is returned and a cleaning crew will help them reorganize the devastation, so they're not so livid anymore. not that they could truly bring wrath at the thief. his grin is too mischeviously infectious, and the glint in his eye betrays him to those that know it, that he truly and deeply enjoyed every second of it. i love him.

on today's show, a teenage girl, more worried about the mess than the missing dog, managed to keep her spite. she's glaring at him through the confrontation. "i hate you," she says. he smiles. "say it again." "i hate you." "good." le_sigh

we identify our heroes based on attainability, similarity. that there is something in them that we see in ourselves. the human part that makes us believe in the idolized part.

I look up to people who fight for something. I don't have a lot of fight in me, it makes me sad.
