there was this guy... playing lovely serene music in this long, long hallway with people rushing through, trying to catch the metro and nobody was paying attention, nobody looked at him, it seemed... maybe they're desensitized, see people like him every day and i didn't know what to do... i mean, I can't play the cello... so why is he sitting on a tiny chair in this hallway getting nickles and dimes and quarters and toonies tossed into the case while i'm meandering aimlessly, doing nothing of any use at all, and tossing a dollar or two into the case? There's probably a reason... a story... somewhere there and i'd kinda like to know what it is, but i'd be too shy to ask, and 'sides, he was busy playing the cello so i gave him $1 on the way into the metro, pausing for a minute or two to listen, and grinned sheepishly on the way out it's just strange

cause that dude would rather be sitting in that tunnel playing his cello for pennies than standing behind a counter taking orders for minimum wage and playing in a situation where it doesn't seem like anyone is paying attention is the best training for those situations where hundreds or maybe even thousands of eyes are staring at you. cause then you can just imagine all those hurried people rushing past not giving a rat's ass. maybe he can't practice where he lives cause his neighbors hate the 'noise.' fortunately, my neighbors didn't seem to mind, but then again i didn't practice at home very much. there was a park about halfway to school on the 30 route and every now and then i would see people, saxophonists, a couple different ones, with their open cases on the park benches jamming away. i'm always amazed by people that can just sit and play in public places like that. it's so intimidating to me. maybe someday i'll have the balls to try it. you never know who might walk past.
