freedom_of_speech
u24 almost every government in the world censors news, to some degree. While some censorship is overt, most occurs covertly, usually via the owners of large media corporations having vested interests in the government they report on. 060324
...
thankfully, censorship hasn't yet permeated the reaches of cyberspace.

That is to say, websites themselve are usually relatively unrestricted in terms of what is acceptable content. Even if a piece of content is said to breach the acceptable use policy, there are plenty of other websites that will happily host such content. On the other hand, it is important to note that some governments have circumvented this freedom of expression on the internet by instead simply blocking access to websites containing what they deem as objectionable terms.

u24 unfortunately, not all censorship is so easily circumvented 060324
...
u24 it fact it's quite enlightening to see blather so mercilessly chopped up like this.
our words are there, but not visible.

it's also unfortunate that not all forms of censorship are this easily spotted. in most cases, i would think, there are no handy black bars to show that what you're reading is not the original.

u24 see also freedom_of_speech2 for a less obvious method.

for number 2 originally, I'd wanted non-links to have black bars, but it seem CSS is incapable.

I wanted to see what perceptual difference there was between majority censored and minority censored.

u24 just a minor tweak. 060324
...
u24 i like the way random nonsensical sentences are constructed from the censored words.

Or perhaps not entirely nonsensical, they seem to reflect the original, but in a twisted-beyond-recognition way.

zeke in this blathe the dynamic nature of the words which become hotlinks will cause more and more words to be redacted as time passes. i like that very much. 060407

somebody I use both. Consequently, some would censor me. It is in everyone's interest to thwart the censors 99.999% of the time. Only in the rarest instances is this not so, no? 070708
