My grandad's funeral was surreal to me. It's strange to know you won't be seeing your loved one again. Odd odd feeling. I was actually okay until I saw his cowboy hat. That's when I lost it. He never went anywhere without his hat. He was just raised in a time when a gentleman never left the house without his hat. They said he asked for his hat right before he died. He said "Bring me my hat, it's time for me to leave. It's been 120 days. My time is up." Everyone thought he was referring to his time in the military. It wasn't until later that we realized it had been exactly 120 days since his birthday. He asked my aunt to make sure his military papers were in order and reminded her that he wanted his 21 gun salute. She gave him his hat and he died. The funeral home people attempted to take his hat out of the casket before they closed it. Our family (all of us) yelled out "NO, leave it with him"...in unison. Granddad MUST have his hat.
