tundra
maruku frozen wasteland
your ruby lips, stiff and froze
a smile, perfectly intact
forever.
and sightless eyes
deep and blue
stare right through me.

ducky There was this wise cracker on my ski team that insisted on calling me this.
He knew my name but thought it was amusing to call me tundra.

I saw him for the first time in a year last week and he said, "Hi, tundra".

Upon hearing that phrase again a frigid shiver trickled down my spine.

I stood there frozen.

And I gave him the iciest glare.

realistic optimist the tiretracks from exploration trips 40+ years ago can still be found in teh tundra. it takes quite some time for it to be repaired. ecological time is slower up there. this being true, the bush administration believes it to be a good idea to devastate the artic national wildlife refuge in order to drill for less than 6 months' worth of recoverable oil (according to the u.s. geological survey) which would not even reach the market for at least ten years, and would not noticeably affect american oil prices, which are set by OPEC. 70% of americans support artic wildlife refuge protection. the other 95% of the north slope of alaska is open for oil drilling and exploration. the senate defeated a vote to drill in the artic national wildlife refuge two times last year. clearly, this administration is acting so far from the public interest that it seems merely a formality to have any elected officials at all. why not just make the 3 branches of government: union carbide, exxon, and halliburton? 041214
