i thought of you today while i was listening to all things considered on npr and patrick watson came on, an interview actually about the new record, "wooden arms." it turned out to be quite a treat because they played a song called bejing that has music from playing a bicycle wheel...that's what the show was all about, how he can play music on just about everything. the host gave the band a box of cereal, a bicycle pump, a glass vase, and something else i can't remember and asked them to make up a song right on the spot and so they did and it was spectacular! he even made up the words right as they were doing it. his voice is itself an instrument. but alas, cereal was scattered everywhere!

alas! "beijing," is awesome. the bicycle spokes are definitely something! i also love the percussion in that song. i'd like to hear what he does with a cereal box... he has imagination, to say the least. i love his improvising, vocal and otherwise. i volunteered at a music festival this summer and there was a workshop in which he, julie doiron, and a few others improvised together, and it was one of my favourite parts of the festival. (one day i shall tell patrick watson that there is a page on the internet devoted to me/him. maybe he'll be amazed and write a song about it on his megaphone/plunger/cereal box.)

i haven't seen "take this waltz," but it was at the film festival last year, and i think my parents saw it. i didn't know there were so many toronto landmarks in it, but perhaps i will now watch it and report back, even if it is odd and a sarah polley wet dream (ha). i'm not sure what i think of her. i do enjoy the "toronto-ness" of scott_pilgrim_vs_the_world

i hadn't seen that, but it's great that patrick_watson played one of those "play me, i'm yours" pianos for an audience. i wish i'd stumbled upon it live. when we had those pianos in the summer, i played radiohead on one, until i forgot how the song went.

that's brilliant! my favourite part: "when god closes a door, he opens a window." he is in general a good interviewer; i'll give him that much. but there are others like him who aren't smarmy and self-absorbed. he hosted some awards recently and recycled the same speech he'd made the year before, and also mispronounced and made fun of popular references in the industry. there was also this: http://www.xojane.com/it-happened-to-me/non-date i feel a bit bad for him that this is documented so widely, but still.

Cool! I'm glad it's going well. I googled "convoluzoplexicated" and I didn't find anybody else using it, just my pretentious/evil blather alter ego: http://blather.newdream.net/s/stravinsky.html ...Not much writing-about that I can tell, besides being torn between two people maybe? I'm like that - I mean there's no one I'm currently in love with right now, but it would be hard to choose between different friends/communities. ...Well, happy birthday Mr. Happy Tuesday. I'm still more a Quirks and Quarks fan. But anyway.

well, it's clearly too convoluzoplexicated for anyone else but you to have coined and used :) it's not so much that i'm choosing between two people; those people actually have nothing to do with each other, and any choices i have to make have to do with what i want only. but everything is still conflicted and complicated. that said, i think things are okay. i'm happy with my decision and the changes that are occurring, even if there's a chance i may regret them. but i have a strong feeling i won't. but the convoluzoplexicatedness (ha) more has to do with moving to another country/not being a citizen/not having a job. but again... things have a way of working themselves out.

I have a weird question for you: Do you have a mother or aunt named Melanie who works in publishing? The reason I'm asking is because I DID have the thought, and not just in blatherskite_dreams, that you might be my cousin Lia's cousin. I don't remember exactly why: I think it was about living in Toronto plus the name of one of your grandfathers. (I'm probably wrong and I could consult my aunt Debra, but I feel I've asked her enough odd questions lately.)

Also I can email and tell you about the magazine my aunt's sister used to edit (sadly it stopped production years ago). Probably not right away, as I'm juggling a few metaphorical hats at present: artisans club committee member, student, tutor, friend, washer of non-metaphorical laundry...
