"How are you tonight," the grocery store cashier asked flatly. She didn't seem to care, so I figured I may as well tell her the truth, stating, "I'm really, really bored." "So you are going to eat?" she responded with a sudden edge in her voice. Lady, I thought, I'm almost forty pounds underweight for my height. Bored_eating is not a problem here. "Nothing on T.V.?" she enquired, again apathetic. Since I really don't watch T.V. much and I wasn't eating merely to pass the time, I began to find the conversation uninspired. "How do you feel about the letter 'S'?" I surveyed in a booming voice. She made a snorting noise and announced that my total was $8.58, that palindrome being the highlight of the experience. "Do you have a favorite kind of cloud?" I asked, determined to have something substantial come of this banal tete-a-tete. "Honey, I don't know what you are talking about," she said, making change quickly, as if to usher me along. Clouds, I thought. I am asking you about clouds. You know, those things in the sky? That white stuff that floats here and there, from time to time? As I walked to the car, I watched the rain fall on the asphalt, and sighed. Liveliness is hard to come by these days, that's how I'm feeling lately. The only way to get passion out of people anymore is to threaten them with riches or make them angry.
