oldephebe What is it that you love about thier "music"? Is it the repetitive syncopated pattern that seems to pervade all of thier endeavors? Could it perhaps be the somewhat awkward melding of hiphop and a not quite pop not quite R&B sound. Could it be the idiosyncratic vocal stylings of the vocalist? Could it be the really, and I'm totally non-ironic here, chic and yet somehow authentic sartorial innovations of thier gear? Or is it the thick braids?

Because I'm thinking that if one would listen to BT&H without the richly textured production values and the richly textured visual accompianament--maybe the Thugs that sing in Harmony couldn't 15thousand records.

It's a little nauseating, really is what I'm trying to get to. It's repetitive and kind of pentatonic and I'm not really sure if the "singers" availed themselves of the skills of a first rate vocal coach.

And mind you I'm not saying this as some ancient curmudeonly fossil who has only listened to a snippet of a track and formulated an opinion based on merely a generational and cultural acclimation. I've been perversly intringued by thier sound and look since the early 90's.

I dig The Roots. Lauren Hill. The Fugies. Blah Blah. Initially thier sound was provocative because of the juxtaposition of the visual and stylistic meldings. But God every freakin' song sounds the same.

Look. I know I must sound like a jerk. Maybe it was that bit of Hatfield sausage that I nuked in the micro-wave and ate with my seafood salad last night. Still though, I marvel at the lack of musical imagination of most consumers of pop-music. I like pop music. I think it is a uniquely American cultural space. Our pop music has infested, much to the detriment some would say, many other cultures and nations around the world.

But still, BT&H? I can do w/o them.

oE But of course they did a duet with mariah carey called "Breakdown" a few years back and because of carey's producing skills and innovative vocal arrangements the song was some of the best work I think they's ever been a part of. 050928
