he sees them in the dark before he falls asleep sometimes. by now there have been hundreds. men and women of all ages, each one a perfectly formed physical specimen, none of them people he's ever seen before. all of them uninvited guests in his bedroom. maybe they're nothing more than inventions of his half asleep mind. i'm not so sure. sometimes they're just standing there, staring at him, looking like they're waiting for something. sometimes they're walking toward him. last night a woman was carrying a large bowl filled with something he couldn't see and she was trying to dump its contents on top of him. "maybe they're trying to tell you something," i said. "have you ever thought about talking to them instead of attacking them?" he doesn't care what they have to say. he kicks at them until they disappear, trying to kill the already dead, when all he's really doing is fighting with the air.

"nobody showed up." the night before that, two men tried to get into his bed. they drove him from sleep and into the stiff arms of the couch in the nearest thing this house has to a living room. two nights later, a man and woman sat on the photocopier. they weren't getting it on. he told them to fuck off anyway. and they did.
