dosquatch Wow - I would've thought this info easier to find than it's turning out to be.

MMMKay, current modern carbonation isn't done with tanks of gas bubbling through liquid. It'd done by tossing chunks of dry ice into huge vats.

So the question then becomes, where does dry ice come from?

There's just bunches of sites happy to tell you that dry ice is made by compressing CO2 into a liquid and blah_blah_blah. But still the question, where do they get the CO2?

Still, though, the Google knows all assuming one knows the right question to ask. A little search massaging, and PRESTO!

dos (for those who don't care to look for the answer, it's in the last paragraph.)

(for those who don't like external links, it basically says that commercial CO2 is captured as a byproduct from existing processes and would otherwise be vented into the atmosphere.)

(for those who now won't follow the link because they've been given the easy answer - wuss.)

(for z, it's not reclaimed from what is already there, but it IS repurposed and would otherwise be waste, so... green? I dunno, I guess this is up to personal interpretation? "What does green mean to you?")

z d: it's good to see your words again. thank you for the exaustive search and the answer. i read it as quasi green. that is, it's better to use the waste gasses on their way to destroying the world, but ultimately, the source is not green. i am sad. carbonation is so nice. i wonder if i can build an air locked greenhouse to drink soda in. that way i'd be locking co2 into bio mass and contributing to the solution. thanks again. 080903
