are not interchangable. imply - to suggest, usually indirectly infer - to pick up a subtle meaning or suggestion i.e., I've implied only that similar sounding words have different meanings. If you infer that I'm talking about a specific person, then you're just paranoid. Thought you might like to know.

inference does not imply intention from the person from whom meaning is inferred. implication is an intentional, conscious action on the part of the implicator, whereas inference is performed by the person listening to/reading/etc.

But cant I infer that you are wrong by implying that there may be an alternative?

By you implying an alternative, I can infer that you think I'm wrong.

when you infer, you are realising or hypothesising a meaning from someone else's words. when you imply, you are intending someone else to realise a meaning from your words.

Leading one to infer, based on the name and the offered pan-licking, that you have made brownies. Yay, brownies! One might also infer that u24 is the Grammar_Nazi. But he's not.

I'm not the Grammar_Nazi, though at the moment he seems to be speaking through me. It kind of feels like jury_duty. You seemed to be taking some heat for his art project. He didn't feel the need to speak up, but I couldn't let it go. He says he'd welcome you as a deputy, however.
