jane oh don't read meno. read symposium 050729
...
jane ah how quickly i skimmed over. my mistake. 050729
...
pete i liked them both 050730
...
jane different as they may be. i preferred the apology & the crito to meno, perhaps because of their more literary style. 050730

pete the apology was interesting.. as was the crito, which was almost like a deathbed confession.. i wrote an essay on the meno where i came to more or less the same conclusion as aristotle on the question of how virtue is "learned" .. perhaps that is why i have such an attachment to it, or maybe its just because lines suchas "by zeus socrates, i do not know" stick out in my mind for one reason or another.. plato is a good read, either way, and the character of socrates is an enjoyable sarcastic bastard in all of them 050731

jane for me, the dialogues concerning the definitions of virtue, justice & courage seem more cyclical & unanswerable. the more literary writing is more intriguing to me, but yes, "by zeus, socrates.." was always a good one. 050801
...
pete i have to say, though, i by far prefer boethius to plato... that man was a genius, writing about 800 years later in exile waiting to be bludgeoned to death... literary and clinical
