epitome of incomprehensibility

I miss J. She's going to be away for three months. I've known her since I was 4 or 5. I'm not thinking of words right now, but characteristics. The first time I met her, she was crying about a puzzle. I'm not sure if there was a piece missing or not, but she dumped it on the floor and kicked it. That was when she was 4 or 5. That was the last time I ever saw her lose her temper over something little like that. I don't think I'm exaggerating. It's very hard to get into a fight with her. Once, in the summer when we were 12, we'd gone cycling on Lakeshore road. We came back too late to get to this youth centre sports thing at 6, and I blamed her for it. She was chattering away as we went back, so I looked at her grumpily and she stopped talking. Then, after she got home, I felt bad and called her. She came over and we watched a movie. (Of course, I needed to stay on her good side if I wanted free help in math.) When we were 15, we went to the same summer camp for a week. It was kind of fun - blue hair dye, jumping out of a canoe into a murky pond, heartfelt teenage conversations about towns vs. cities and one girl's love for the blue-haired counselor. There was an annoying girl who gave us "helpful" advice: J could "do something with her hair" and I could "do something" about the acne on the "T area" (tea area?) of my face. The scary thing was, she probably meant well. I remember standing next to her in front of the tetherball pole during free time. I asked her, a little annoyed, why she kept saying "It's all good" since it wasn't, clearly, all good? (Helpful Advice Girl had been getting on my nerves.) She said it was a sort of encouragement. (As if goodness was somewhere, even if the not-goodness was more obvious. But that is my present interpretation.) I asked, "What's if I climbed to the top of that pole" (I pointed) "and started throwing scrunched-up Kleenexes at people?" Evidently that was the worst crime I could think of. "Would you tell me 'it's all good' then?" She paused and thought about it. "No, I'd say that to the people you were throwing Kleenexes at."

friends can be doors, portals to opportunities you would otherwise miss. they have you in mind, you have them in mind, you share things with each other that remind you of each other. life enhancers. It takes a village to raise quality human children and protect and grow human hearts, friends are the village.

ryan and i were lamenting that restaurants and shops in toronto and ann arbor are all about selling an “experience” now—there’s no authenticity anymore, there’s a dearth of humble spaces that accept anyone and everyone. Everything is constructed and curated towards the sole goal of getting one’s brand promoted on social media. “they don’t realize that the only experience they’re selling is alienation,” he said. right-o, brother.
