we argue about police all the time. i had watched the young turks coverage of another cop killing someone in the street for next to nothing and was bitching about bad training, about how they obviously don't have any de-escalation training 'i'm sure they have more than you think' 'what makes you so sure?'

'moreover, the department (of baltimore police) has failed to equip officers with sufficient de-escalation skills and tactics. the department had no comprehensive training on de-escalation techniques until 2015 (!!!???!!!), when it added de-escalation training to the academy's use of force curriculum for new recruits. we commend the department for it's efforts and desire to implement de-escalation training. nevertheless, work remains to ensure that these de-escalation skills are sufficiently emphasized within the academy's use of force curriculum.' - from the united states department of justice report on the baltimore police department in response to the death of freddie gray

'until july 2016, BPD policies on force failed to encourage any de-escalation strategies. it is critical that officers be provided guidance not only on when and how force may be used, but also that they be encouraged to use tactics that minimize the need for force. using force against members of the public is not only an intrusion to the subject of force, it also creates risks for officers entangled in these encounters by heightening tensions and creating situations in which officers may also, in turn, be injured. BPD's new policies have taken some steps to incorporate de-escalation principles, but significant work remains to ensure that de-escalation strategies are understood and utilized throughout the department.' - from the united states department of justice report on the baltimore police department

'additionally, until recently, BPD had no comprehensive trying on de-escalation strategies to guide officers on how to resolve incidents without resorting to force. it created a short course on de-escalation in 2015, a positive step forward. however, given the novelty of de-escalation tactics within BPD's curriculum, it is important that leadership within the department make clear to officers that this skill set is critical to keeping officers, as well as community members, safe. the department must ensure that de-escalation is sufficiently emphasized and integrated into all of its courses involving force such that officers understand it is a critical tool for resolving incidents' - from the united states department of justice report on the baltimore police department
