i want to believe you, when you say, its me you want. i want to know, what it is that makes you think you want me. i want to know why, because you dont know me. there is a part of me what wants you to. there is a part of me that hopes you do. there is a part of me that thinks you could. i want to believe that you want me. mind body and soul. i believe you only want one, because, you always dissapear. i want to believe...

is the tag line for the x files. it so perfectly identifies it's demographic. it is a welcome siren song for those with the exact attitude that makes the show so attractive: willful gullibility. and since it is couched in the first person, it serves as an easily adoptable inner mantra, an anthemic slogan and also as reassurance that there are others who are like-minded. it is an exceptionally well crafted piece of writing.

the opposite of willful is more like passive. i think cynicism is an accurate antonym, however. so: passive cynicism. my cynicism is neither passive or willful, it is philosophical.
