hoosier
Hoosier Rhin Pronounced "Hoo'zhur".

A name tag worn by natives and/or resident's of Indiana for more than 150 years. No researcher has ever been able to pin down, beyond question, the term's origin. Versions and theories abound, but a tongue-in-cheek or ear-on-floor version offered by the famed Indiana poet, James Whitcomb Riley, is often quoted:

"These stories about the origin of the word 'Hoosier' are all nonsense. The real origin is found in the pugnacious habits of early settlers. They were vicious fighters...and frequently bit off noses and ears...A settler coming into a barroom on a morning after a fight, and seeing an ear on the floor, would merely push it aside with his foot and carelessly ask, 'Whose ear?'"

Whatever it's genesis, the monicker has stuck!
