Because people didn't have tv until recently and so chose to be entertained ,and ultimately molded, by storys instead. This traveled from one ear to another until it passed into legend and then into myth. Once there was absolutley no way to prove it either direction someone HAD to dedicate their life to it....

...also, christ was speaking metaphorically. It was a reference to sacriment and his teachings.
