The streetlights stood like stolid sentinels, reaching up into the dark sky with their orange torches. The crumbling brick of the houses and the cobblestone street were also unnoticed by him. The only thing on his mind was she. He stared down the gloomily lit street, watching her lovely slender back as it began to fade into the dark.
Lyle had never stood a chance in the first place, so he wondered why his heart felt so hollow. He didn’t want to accept that things were over. He hadn’t told her yet that she was the only one he’d ever loved. His mouth curved into a slight smile as he remembered how she had laughed at dinner. The way her hair fell as she twirled about on the dance floor, and the way her eyes shined as she watched the fireworks sparkling in the summer sky.
He came back to reality and looked down the street. She was gone. His heart jumped and he began to run, he needed to find her. He felt a familiar tightness in his throat, and an inexplicable horror rise up in him.
"Julia!" he called out, pausing to breathe.
He heard something
He began to jog down the street. It was darker now, and the streetlights seemed dimmer. His face froze in horror at the sight before him. His heart died as he uttered her name.
