there were two today. the first was "it's a good life if you don't weaken" by the tragically hip. then i fell back to sleep, and when i woke up again it was "happiness is a warm gun" by the beatles.

a song from a dream, with a voice that didn't seem to appreciate its own weight. the only words i heard: "things are better in the heart."

another one from a dream. this time it was a song performed by an obscure (and nonexistent in the waking world) country singer from the 1950s named texas jerry. i triggered what might have been the only recording he made in his lifetime by pressing a single key on an archaic sampling keyboard. it was pretty lightweight stuff, but there was something compelling about his voice. some hitch that made me think of hank williams. he smiled in my mind and sang, "i give myself to you, my_love. i give myself to you." middle c played the song back at its intended pitch. i tried the lowest note on the keyboard to see what would happen. texas jerry's voice grew richer and more resonant, and instead of the grotesque slowed-down weirdness i was expecting to hear, i got something closer to the burden of experience set against a few major chords.

"Genesis" by Grimes (the chorus melody, whose words escape me - but maybe it's not supposed to have real words, in the style of Sigur Ros or what's-his-name's Songs of Sanctuary)

No, that part of the tune has these words: "My heart, I never feel I never see I never know" (and it did sound something like "heart")

One day it's the trumpet call (actually clarinet) from Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time. The next it's this Coldplay chorus - although the lyrics have been scrubbed of the song's title, "Speed of Sound" - Birds keep flying from the underground To show us how it all began Birds keep flying from the underground If you see it, then you'll understand

Not a preexisting song; something I'd made up that went like It's a villainous account With a criminal amount Which I really, really, really can't count. ...It sounded somewhat like Gilbert and Sullivan, which I CAN account for. I_joined_a_band_of_musical_pirates (local musical theatre group doing Pirates of Penzance this pirates) and had practice last night.
