Ownership is a not a universal concept. Not all people see the world/universe in terms of ownership. Australian History Lesson: Aborigines lived here for tens of thousands of years. British came here, saw that there were no flags and no fences, decided that no one owned the land and claimed it for themselves. More than that, they decided that the aborigines that were here didn't count as people and declared the land "terra nullius"- "empty land". They then went about trying to make the aborigines disappear by various means. The rest is living history.
